Engravings

Jewellery has the ability to become intertwined with our life and identity. It can hold so much sentimental value and can be a tangible item that we often feel lost without.

At KIND, we understand how precious this connection is, which is why we also offer engraving services on our collection and bespoke designs.

An engraving is like writing a love letter that will last forever. It’s a special way to mark keepsakes with a permanent messages and symbols to tell beautiful stories of the people, places and events you are connected to. At KIND, we use laser engraving methods to etch the details into your jewellery.

Laser Engraving allows for precise engraving using fonts or images. It is a most modern method of engraving, where a highly concentrated laser beams are used to perform the engraving. Since the lettering is created digitally, you are able to choose from a selection of fonts, use your own handwriting, or include a drawing or doodle.

Today we have outlined the different ways that you can incorporate engravings into your timeless KIND jewellery.

Choose your favourite font

Nothing is off limits here! Choose your favourite font to engrave a special name or message. This can be done on most of our collection pieces, as long as there is enough surface area. Our most popular collection pieces to engrave are; Full Moon Disc Necklace, Stella Disc Necklace, Otto Disc Necklace, Crescent Lune Disc Necklace and Soleil Disc Necklace.

Use your own handwriting

Make this gift even more personal, with you own handwriting. Write your name or message onto a piece of paper, and send an image across to KIND Collection. Our laser engraving technology allows us to use this image and imprint it onto your jewellery.

Drawing or doodle

Similar to using your own handwriting, we have the ability to engrave a drawing or doodle onto you jewellery. This can be a family crest or a symbolic image that is meaningful to you and your loved ones.

If you have any questions about our engraving services, please don’t hesitate to reach out. If the piece you would like to engrave doesn’t offer you the option to engrave, please get in contact with us and we can advise a way to make the design possible.

Victoria's Recycle + Rework project

As we bring in the new year, we wanted to celebrate a bespoke design, which was made towards the end of 2021, using pre-loved family heirlooms.

We understand that a piece of jewellery can become so intwined with ones identity, which gives it so much sentimental value when it is passed down through generations. As part of our mission to reduce waste and to prolong the life of jewellery, KIND offers a Recycle + Rework service, which allows us to use family heirlooms, and rework them into a new design that will be worn and loved – just as it once was.

When Victoria approached us last year, we felt honoured to be a part of this highly personal project, as she had inherited three beautiful rings from her Mother who had recently passed. Whilst these rings were once worn everyday by her late Mother, Victoria wanted to redesign them and create two new rings that spoke to her personal style.

We worked incredibly closely with Victoria on every element of the ring to ensure it was perfect for her. The end results was a ring that represents Victoria’s style, but has been made using the rings she will always remember her mother wearing. We were able to include the 18ct gold and diamonds from the original rings – and polish them up before returning them to the new design.

We are committed to working closely with our Recycle + Rework clients to produce a design that is symbolic to their family and loved ones. We understand that this process is incredibly personal and that each piece of jewellery can hold a lot of emotional value. If you would like to chat to us about redesigning a piece that you have inherited, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. We will be here for you every step of the way.

How to avoid burnout at Christmas

Christmas can bring so much joy – but it can also be tainted with stress and anxieties. Today, we are sharing a few helpful tips to help prevent burnout during the festive season, so you can maximise your time with family and friends.

Purchase your gifts early

Don’t leave your Christmas shopping to the last minute! This can cause unnecessary stress and panic purchases, which can lead to the overconsumption of goods at Christmas. Instead, think ahead and invest your money wisely, with a small or local business who will make your order with love and care. If you are thinking about purchasing a gift from KIND, please be mindful of our cut-off dates below.

International orders: December 6th

UK orders (with personalisation): December 13th

UK orders: December 20th

Please note that you can still order from KIND after these dates, we just cannot. guarantee that they will be wrapped up and under your tree in time for Christmas.

Create boundaries

As deadlines draw closer, work can pile up in the final months of the year. It is important to create boundaries and ensure you still balance work and life. Try working within a regular schedule - which means clocking off at a normal time. Set timers on your phone to remind yourself when it's time to clock off, and remember to take regular breaks throughout the day.

Similarly, try creating emotional boundaries by not having frequent conversations about work and actually take the time to switch off and connect with your loved ones. Give yourself the rest and recovery you deserve and require. Your productivity and mental health will benefit from it!

Learn to say ‘no’

It’s okay to say ‘no’ and put your mental health first. During the Christmas season, there is often a lot of pressure to attend and help organise a lot of events and activities. It can be incredibly empowering to say no to certain events that you know will only add to your stress. Prioritise the “you time”, and never feel guilty for not being able to do everything.

Let go of some expectation

Take a look at the projects and tasks that you have set for the next couple of months and challenge yourself to let go of at least one thing that you really don’t need to get done in that time frame. You might discover that some tasks can be deleted from your list forever. Remember that after some time off, you’ll feel refreshed and ready to tackle projects with a new approach.

Switch off from technology

Give your mind and body a break and switch off from technology for a few days. When we disconnect, we give ourselves a chance to notice our own thoughts, and to check in with ourselves. We are all so used to checking our devices all of the time, but sometime away can be invigorating and can allow you to reconnect to the people, places and things around you. If switching off for a full day isn’t possible, trying locking in set hours each day.

We wish you all a wonderful festive season! Please remember to look after yourself during this time, and have a great break during the holidays.

If you have any questions about Christmas orders, please don’t hesitate to get in contact with us.

World Kindness Day

This weekend we have been celebrating World Kindness Day! As our name suggests we consider ourselves to be a KIND brand, so this day is particularly special to us. We are passionate about creating and making beautiful pieces of jewellery but not at the cost of our planet or the people we share it with, and we are focused on educating our community about shopping smarter and more sustainably.

We wanted to take this opportunity to encourage our community to start their Christmas gift shopping early, in order to prevent panic buying of any unnecessary purchases in December. We are firm believers in buying less – but choosing well, and we want to offer our customers 15% off our entire collection for the next week, to help alleviate the stress of last-minute festive gifting.

We are very open about the supply chain here at KIND Collection, and we are proud that our jewellery is made using ethically and sustainable sourced materials. You can learn more about our materials in our recent blog: The KIND Supply Chain.

Materials aside, there are so many other ways that we aim to be kind in the studio.

How is KIND Collection, kind?

We use vegan polishing products to eliminate the off-flow of chemicals harming the environment and entering the waterways

Our collection is made to order to reduce any dead stock

We use Bio degradable baggies to store our jewellery

In partnership with One Tree Planted, we donate a tree for every order placed online

We meltdown and recycle every last scrap of metal whilst making new jewellery (reducing any wastage)

We only use responsibly sourced materials, including 100% recycled and Fairmined precious metals

We offer free repairs on KIND jewellery, to ensure the longevity of each piece

This Christmas season, we encourage you to invest your money wisely and support small and local businesses. Here at KIND, we see, celebrate and hand make every order that is placed online.

Handmade jewellery

With so many designers and brands producing jewellery across the globe, it can be hard to know who to support, and where to invest your money. As always, we encourage our audience to choose carefully, and purchase from small or local businesses whenever possible. Today we are sharing the benefits of our handmade jewellery – and why quality over quantity is best. Let’s discus!

UNIQUE

From our collection to our bespoke services, every piece of jewellery from KIND has been carefully handcrafted. Each piece is made to order, which means your jewellery will be unique to you, as there will always be slight variations in the design. We see the beauty in imperfections and we celebrate these variations for their individuality, and we hope you do too.

QUALITY

We use ethically sourced materials from selected suppliers to create our jewellery, and you can learn more about this on our recent blog – The KIND Supply Chain. We strongly believe in the mantra that “less is more”, which is why we only use the highest quality, longest lasting materials in our collection. A significant amount of time goes into each design, and they are made to be worn for decades, and passed down through generations. We take great pride in the work that we produce, and we offer our customers free repairs on any damages (within reason) that occur to their KIND jewellery.

LESS WASTE

At KIND, we make a conscious effort to reduce our waste, wherever possible. One of the beautiful benefits of handmade jewellery means that our collection is made to order, so we are never left with any dead stock. On the busy gifting occasions (i.e. Christmas), we will often preemptively create more stock – however if it doesn’t sell, we can melt it back down and turn it into a new design (that’s the beauty of working with solid metals!).

PERSONALISATION

With each piece made to order, you are able to personalise your design to best suit you. We offer engravings and the addition of gemstones in a range of our jewellery, so you can create a piece that represents you and your life’s history. These personalised pieces are perfect for gifting – especially as the holiday season is fast approaching. If you would like to personalise a piece of jewellery with a gemstone – but it isn’t available on the product listing, please get in touch! We will do our best to help you source a stone, and fit it into you new piece.

Although handmade jewellery can sometimes come at a higher price, the investment is worth it in the long run. Our jewellery is made to last a lifetime – not a season, and it has been made with our planet and humankind in mind. If you have any questions or would like to personalise you jewellery in any way, please feel free to reach out. We are always here to help!

With love,

KIND Collection

The KIND supply chain

Sustainability has been at the core of KIND Collection, since day one. As a business (and individuals), we are highly conscious of the impact that our actions can have on the planet, and we are always looking for ways to reduce our footprint. We believe that less is more and encourage our community to vote with their pound, consider their purchases, and do their research about the brands they are supporting.

But it can be a total minefield, right?

Today we would like to highlight our supply chain – from mine to market, so you can purchase from KIND Collection, knowing that your jewellery has been made consciously with the hope of having a positive impact to our wider world community and the planet we call home. We are a fully transparent so If you have any questions or would like to know more about any of our suppliers, processes & practices then please don’t hesitate to get in touch!

THE COLLECTION

Our entire collection is made using solid precious metals to ensure it’s longevity. Each design is cast in 100% recycled Silver & 9ct Gold. We love that these materials can be so wonderfully recycled. What was once cherished by one person can be melted down, redesigned and repurposed into a beautiful new piece for another person and so the cycle continues. Our recycled materials are sourced from Vipa Designs Limited – a UK based casting house that source 100% recycled and traceable Fairtrade and Fairmined metals.

BESPOKE PROJECTS & WEDDING JEWELLERY

Our bespoke customers have the choice of designing their jewellery in 100% recycled Silver, Gold & Platinum, or alternatively can opt to work with Fairmined Silver & Gold metals. KIND is proud to have been a Fairmined Licencee since 2017 and to date has created pieces using over 140gms of the material. Fairmined works to ‘transform mining into an active force for good’. The metal is newly mined by small artisanal mines, which are accredited by the organisation and works to incentivise positive mining practices. This ensures that workers are respected in regards to their safely, rights & wages – and they also offers full transparency from mine to maker. It works closely with the Alliance of Responsible Mining to help implement change in the industry from the ground up. You can read more about Fairmined precious metals, here.

DIAMONDS

As diamonds are frequently sought after for wedding and engagement rings, they are a popular gemstone in the KIND studio. We work very closely with our suppliers to ensure that every stone that we include in our jewellery has been ethically sourced, can be fully traceable, and is 100% conflict free. The diamonds at KIND have been sourced from a number of sources depending on the needs for each specific project our suppliers include Ocean Diamonds for diamonds which are hand picked from the sea bed off the coast of Namibia and South Africa. Fair Trade Gemstones for Canada Mark Diamonds which are mined in the North West Territories of Canada and work within a closed supply chain to ensure their provenance. Our more unusual Salt & Pepper Diamonds are sourced from Calab Q Quashen in California who work directly with family run mineds in Botswana to sources their stones. Each supplier has a strong focus on implementing change within the mining industry as a whole and hopes to create a safer future for the workers and their winder communities.

PRECIOUS GEMSTONES

Gemstones feature quite prominently in our bespoke and collection pieces – We use a handful of trusted suppliers each of which we have developed a beautiful relationship with over the years. We have done our research to ensure they are traceable from mine to market – so you can know know the history of your gemstone. Each supplier has it’s own specialism and as each stone is unique we seek out the perfect stones to fit each design. A majority of our Sapphires, Rubies & Emeralds are sourced from Fair-Trade Gemstones which is a family run business and has operated for over 40 years. For more unusual Sapphires we work closely with Nineteen48 which operate their own mines and cutting houses in beautiful Sri Lanka (a place very close to our hearts). For Emeralds and Amethysts we source directly from Brazil Gemstones which is another wonderful family run business.

At KIND Collection, we aim to be 100% transparent about our suppliers, manufacturing processes and the materials used. If you have any questions or would like to know more about our jewellery, please don’t hesitate to get in touch!

With love,

KIND

Interview: Aviela

It’s no secret that at KIND we love a little bit of self–care. Looking after your body and mind is what keeps us grounded (and creative!). True to our name and our values, our version of self–care must always be kind to the planet, and those we share it with.

With all of this in mind, we are so pleased to share a conversation that we had this week, with the truly marvellous Patricia from Aviela.

Aviela is a natural skincare range that uses 100%, pure, high-grade and unrefined Sea Butter as the hero ingredient. It was such a pleasure getting to know Patricia and her business a little better, and you can have a sneak peek into our chat below.

1.png

Can you please tell us a little bit about Aviela – and how you got started?

In 2006 my daughter was 2yrs of age and had still not taken those first precious steps. Whilst we were on a trip to Ghana, I decided to seek medical advice and saw a bone specialist who recommended that I massage Shea butter onto my daughter’s ankle for the next two weeks. After 3 days of using the shea butter, my daughter took those precious steps. It was a miracle! I wanted to learn more about this natural product, and I discovered that it had a lot of natural vitamins and minerals that can be very beneficial for people who were suffering from dry skin conditions.

That’s how Aviela started, and the rest is now history!

What makes Aviela different from other natural skincare brands?

Every single Aviela product has been consciously made with 100% natural and naturally derived ingredients (and absolutely nothing else)! Our range is also cruelty free, vegan where possible and packaged using fully recyclable materials.

With Shea Butter being our hero ingredients in our current range, we ensure that our products are made with the highest grade unrefined Shea Butter, to ensure optimal results. Unlike many other shea butter products that can be heavy and drag on the skin, our products are light and airy, and they absorb quickly into the skin.

As the seasons change from summer to autumn, we all need a little extra love. What are your top tips for keeping our body and mind nourished through the colder months?

In these cooler months, our body tends to dry out quite quickly, which is mainly due to the fact that we go into rooms with heaters on and then come outside to face the cold weather. One on my top tips during this time is to use skincare products that help to seal moisture in the skin, like Shea butter. Our products in general are also blended with other carefully selected natural ingredients, which work with the Shea Butter to keep the skin nourished and protected. As much as we care for the skin, it is important to look after your mind as well! We also tend to stay indoors during these winter months, so it is important to stay active! It may be time to join a sporting club like a badminton or squash? Keeping active and social can help to soothe the mind.

If you could make one change to your industry, what would it be?

The biggest change that I would like to see in the beauty industry is for every brand to be more sustainable. Reducing our impact by packaging our products in recycled material or biodegradable packaging would be an amazing step, as this is still such a big issue in the beauty space.

3.png

How do you work with the Women's Cooperative in Africa? And what impact does this partnership have on the communities involved?

Our mission at Aviela is to transform skin, whilst also transforming the life of the women who craft and make our raw unrefined shea butter.

We source our unrefined Shea butter directly from a women’s cooperative, which is based in the underdeveloped part of Northern Ghana. This relationship empowers the community and the women who craft our Shea Butter, who rely heavily on the proceeds to feed their families and school their children.

The high concentration of Shea Butter in all Aviela products means we can buy more from these wonderful women, so they in turn have more income and the opportunity to access education, training and can buy more food for their families.

4.png

To celebrate the power of self-care, and the benefits of ethical business practices, we have collaborated with Aviela on a giveaway! The giveaway will begin at 5pm tonight (Monday, October 4th). Head to our Instagram tonight to find out more.

Engagement rings

At KIND, our aim is to create meaningful and long lasting pieces of jewellery for our customers – which is why we have such a soft spot for making wedding and engagement rings. The celebration of love and commitment is something so powerful, and we always feel so honoured to be a part of the journey.

Jewellery can be so personal and hold so much sentimental value, which is why it is important to design a ring that is unique to you, and your relationship. Whilst some couples prefer the proposal to be a surprise for their partner, many come to us as a couple ready to design their engagement rings together.

Whichever path you decide to go down, there are a lot of things to consider when designing an engagement ring – but the first step should always be to set a budget. Once you have a budget in mind, Tansy can help you create a stunning ring that wont break the bank. There is no right or wrong amount to spend on an engagement ring (and the myth that a ring should cost the equivalent of 3 months salary, is total rubbish). We’ve said it once, and we’ll say it again (probably quite a few times), that your wedding and engagement rings should be highly personalised to you, and that includes how much you intend to spend on them.

Tansy will be here for you every step of the way, to make sure your ring is exactly what you had envisioned. From the stone’s cut and setting, to the metal and engraving – your ring should tell a story. Choosing the right gemstone can be quite a challenge, so it is always good to have a bit of an idea in mind of the general ring style.

Contrary to popular belief, diamonds aren’t a girls bestfriend – you are (that’s why she’s marrying you!). So don’t get yourself stuck in the mindset that your engagement ring HAS to be a diamond. There are so many beautifully coloured stones out there that hold just as much meaning and sentimental value as a diamond, and it might be the right fit for you.

4.png

A particularly special and sentimental part of our business is our Recycle + Rework services. If you or your partner have inherited jewellery over time, and would like to include those stones and metals in your engagement/wedding rings, then we can certainly help you with this. Family heirlooms can be incredibly meaningful, and can be redesigned into a piece that is unique to you, and will become embroidered into the story of your life.

We have had the pleasure of designing so many wonderful engagement rings for men and women over the years, and we have loved how powerful and unique each story is.

If you are ready to discuss your engagement and wedding ring ideas – please get in touch! Our bespoke appointments have just become available, and can be made online. If you have an idea in mind for your ring, we encourage you to bring it along to this appointment. If you are feeling a little overwhelmed and need a little bit of inspiration, Tansy will help you find a style that feels right for the two of you.

Interview: Yay For Earth

At KIND, we love to spotlight amazing brands that are doing incredible things in the community to promote ethical and sustainable practices and consumption. One of the main reasons we started our Slow Sundays was to introduce our followers to these brands, to make it easier for them to make greener choices.

We recently sat down with Sophie, the managing director of Yay For Earth – to highlight the work that they have been doing to create a line of skincare that safe for the earth and safe for our faces and bodies.

15.png

Tell us a little about Yay for Earth - how did things get started?

Yay for Earth was created by climate activist, Stevie Van Horn (@stevieyaaaay), after she began her low waste lifestyle and was looking for an alternative face lotion for those sold in stores. She wanted something straight from the Earth, minimal ingredients, and completely plastic free, so she decided to create her own! She began sharing it a bit on social media and people began to reach out asking her to sell it. From there, Yay for Earth was born!

Where are Yay for Earth Products made and where do you source your ingredients?

Stevie makes each and every lotion herself! She was located in Brooklyn, NY, but has recently moved back to Boulder, CO, where she is now making them. She spent months and months sourcing the best of the best for the ingredients (organic olive oil, organic Shea butter, organic pomegranate seed oil and locally sourced beeswax), and all come from small companies that put the earth first!

16.png

What do you think are common misconceptions when it comes to natural skincare?

I think that there are a lot of misconceptions when it comes to skincare, but the biggest one would be that we need a ton of different products to keep our skin healthy. We truly believe (and have the proof!) that skincare should be simple, but nourishing. So many people have noticed a huge difference in their skin when they switched to Yay for Earth from chemical-based products. We should treat our skin the way we treat our bodies - give it nutritious and healing ingredients straight from the Earth!

As a brand, you highlight your shift towards zero-waste living. Can you give us an insight into your journey so far, and what is your top advice for those looking to reduce their own waste?

Yay for Earth has been as "zero waste" as possible since day one! It has always been extremely important to Stevie to be transparent as a brand, and prove that it is possible to create and distribute a product with minimal waste. We are starting to steer away from the term "zero waste" a bit, because it's close to impossible to be completely waste free, but we hope to one day figure out a way how!

We only use glass or aluminum packaging (way more recyclable than plastic and can be recycled indefinitely - plus a lot of our customers reuse their jars in such creative ways!). The labels on the jars are also completely compostable, we ship our orders in recycled/recyclable paper, and buy all ingredients in bulk to avoid any unnecessary waste. The biggest advice would probably be to really look into the products you are buying and promoting, because our dollar is our vote!

Shop small, try to buy in bulk, bring your own bags, buy in glass and aluminum when possible, support local farmers and farmers markets, and don't get down on yourself if you slip up every once in a while.

Untitled design - 2021-08-18T165921.979.png

In today’s bustling world, what are a few things that you do to ‘slow down’?

Both Stevie and I really enjoy exercising for mental health, she does daily tea ceremonies to set intentions for the day, we both try to spend time cooking and enjoy feeding our bodies nutritious foods, listening to podcasts, watching a movie, creating some art, going for walks in nature, etc!

Anniversary Gifting Guide

Gemstones are worn and loved for a number of reasons – including their symbolic significance. For centuries, gemstones have been associated with different wedding anniversaries, and are gifted between significant others, to symbolise their everlasting love.

If you have an anniversary coming up – a bespoke piece of jewellery with your celebratory gemstone might be a beautiful way to commemorate the date!

1.png

1 year

Whilst it isn’t a gemstone – the traditional gift for the first anniversary is gold. Simple and devine, gold is associated with the sun and the heart. It is a gift of true affection, and is symbolic of enlightenment. A timeless piece of jewellery from our collection can make for a perfect first anniversary gift. If you want to go the extra mile to make it personal, you can have your jewellery engraved with your own handwriting.

3.png

5 years

One of the most popular gemstones in the KIND studio – sapphires are loved for their eternal beauty, and diversity. Not only do they come in a range of deep blues, sapphires are also available in almost every colour (except red – which is then classified as a Ruby). Sapphires are the second hardest gemstones (after diamonds), and symbolise the unbreakable bond between a married couple, and is traditionally gifted on the 5th anniversary. The Rainbow Horizon Bar Necklace is a beautiful choice to celebrate this anniversary, as is the Margot Vintage Ring, or a bespoke design.

10 years

Just like the first year, the traditional gemstone for the 10 year anniversary is the Diamond. Unbreakable and ever-lasting, diamonds are the gemstone that is commonly worn to celebrate the first decade of marriage. Our Full Moon Necklace can be personalised with a diamond (or another gemstone of your choosing), making it a wonderful gift to celebrate your first decade together. Our vintage ladies are another great gifting option, as their designs are unique – just like your relationship!

20 years

Rich in colour and symbolic of sincerity, the traditional 20th anniversary gemstone is an emerald. Emeralds are believed to bring wisdom, growth and patience – all devoted qualities to celebrate in your second decade of marriage. Personalise one of our collection necklaces to include this stunning gemstone, and make it a piece that you will wear close to your heart every day

30 years

Representing strength and eternity, pearls are the traditional symbol for those celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary. Born from strength and connected to the ocean, pearls symbolise innocence, faith and honesty.

5.png

40 years

A 40th anniversary is certainly something to celebrate – and what better way to do so than with the traditional anniversary gemstone, the ruby. The deep red colour of the ruby is known to represent romance, devotion and passion – all qualities that make it such a special stone.

If you would like to learn more about our bespoke services, or would like to personalise a piece of jewellery to represent your love – please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us.

What is Greenwashing?

Greenwash /ˈɡriːnwɒʃ/

noun

Disinformation disseminated by an organisation so as to present an environmentally responsible public image.

"While they can be useful, these sorts of standards are sometimes used quite cynically—as corporate greenwash"

Definition from Oxford Languages

What is Greenwashing?

Greenwashing, is the term used when companies or organisations promote misleading information to position themselves as “green” and sustainable. More time and money is spent by these companies deceitfully marketing themselves as environmentally friendly, rather than actually implementing practices to reduce their environmental impact.

Why do companies Greenwash?

Whilst some greenwashing may be unintentional, many businesses advertise a sustainability pledge to their audience, to appeal to an environmentally conscious target market. Greenwashing is often used to boost a companies reputation, and give them a competitive advantage over their rivals.

The Issue

The main issue with greenwashing is that it leads well-intentioned consumers down the wrong path. When choosing between two products, a conscious consumer is more likely to purchase from a brand that has a positive impact on our planet. Greenwashing can make it harder for the community to identify which brand is the ‘greener’ option to choose from.

What to look out for…

Fluffy language or vague statements with no examples to back up the claims.

It’s important to look for information as to how the product is eco-friendly. What about it makes it friendly to the environment? Keep in mind there’s the product itself and then the methods used to manufacture the product - which may not be so green.

FOR EXAMPLE: ‘Environmentally Friendly’

When you see this statement, ask yourself, “Compared to what?”. Everything that we create and consume has an impact on the planet. Businesses that includes “environmentally friendly” in their product description, should be able to explain how it’s better for the environment than an alternative.

Suggestive imagery/graphics that give an unwarranted impression of being “green”.

We’re talking about unrelated green leaves, trees and ‘green’ colour palettes used on packaging or in advertisements.

Irrelevant emphasis on one small ‘green’ feature of a product whilst the rest are not.

A company that prints their labels on recycled paper, may claim to be green – however the rest of their product line may support fast fashion. Whilst it is amazing that businesses are taking steps towards a greener future, it’s still important to recognise that there are elements of the business that need to improve. One green action doesn’t equate to a green business!

What to remember

It is important to remember genuinely ‘green’ products and brands backup their claims with facts and detail. In fact, businesses that are sustainable will often be eager to show you examples of how they promote positive change throughout their brand.

Design your own jewellery

Design your own dream piece of jewellery, with KIND Collection

At KIND, we know how personal jewellery can be, which is why we love working one-on-one with our lovely customers, to help them to design a piece of jewellery that they can treasure for life. Our bespoke service is a highly collaborative process, and it is always exciting working alongside our customers to help them create a truly unique, and inspiring design.

Every bespoke piece that comes from the KIND studio has been carefully made with our customer in mind. These designs don’t just look wonderful – they are also intricately made to hold character, so they can be hallmarked with the customers personality and style.

We can also personalised our collection of fine jewellery, by adding an engraved message, birthstone or other unique requests. If you would like to add your own twist to any of our existing jewellery designs, please get in touch with us.

THREE REASONS WHY BESPOKE IS THE WAY TO GO

UNIQUE: If you create a bespoke design, you have the chance to create a piece of jewellery that is truly unique to you. Whether you include your birthstone, family crest, initials or a symbolic character, you have the ability to make a piece of jewellery that is truly reflective of your style, ethos and background.

EMOTIONAL VALUE: As this design has quite literally been made for you, it holds a tremendous amount of emotional value. As part of our Recycle + Rework service, we can also include the materials from some of your pre-loved and inherited jewellery, so you can keep those pieces with high sentimental value, close to you.

HEIRLOOM: Each bespoke piece that comes from the KIND studio, is made with the intention of it becoming a modern heirloom. Our bespoke jewellery is made with the highest quality materials, so they can become investments and stories that can be passed down through generations.

THE DESIGN PROCESS

THE MEETING: If you are ready to get the process started, set up a meeting with the lovely KIND founder, Tansy Haak. Our meetings are now available online and in person – so you can choose an option that will suit your lifestyle best. In this meeting, you can discuss styles, designs, budgets and timing. You will also have the chance to talk through your metal and gemstone options, and you are welcome to include any of your own existing materials from inherited and pre-loved designs.

THE INITIAL DESIGN: Whether you come to the meeting with an idea in mind or not, Tansy will listen to all the elements that you want to include, and create a mock up drawing of your soon-to-be piece. This will give you a general idea of the design at hand, and you can request any changes along the way.

THE WAX DESIGN: Once the initial design has been approved, Tansy will start creating the mould of the ring in wax. Once it has been completed, she will send the physical wax copy across to you, so you can see exactly what your design will look like. If it is a ring, you will also be able to see if the sizing is correct.

THE FINAL COPY: Once you have reviewed the wax design, and you are happy with everything, then the ring will be finalised and made in your desired metal. If you want to include an engraving, this will be included in the final copy.

If you have an idea in mind, and want to bring it to life, please send us an email to hello@kindjewellery.com – and we can organise your first meeting! If you have any special requests for our collection pieces, please feel free to send us an email or a DM via Instagram.

Fairmined Gold & Silver

Gold to be proud of…

‘By buying Fairmined gold you help us to improve our methods, protect the environment and improve our performance in social responsibility’. Rose Reyes, Peru Mine Manager

At KIND Collection, we are proud to exclusively use ethically sourced materials, from a number of wonderful global suppliers. When it comes to metals, we work with either recycled or Fairmined gold + silver, to ensure its authenticity.

Our jewellery designs are made with two considerations in mind — our planet, and those we share it with. As a result, sourcing ethically mined materials is so important to us, which is why we choose to work with Fairmined for all bespoke jewellery, wedding pieces and engagement rings!

KIND founder – Tansy Haak, uses certified Fairmined gold for a number of reasons, one of which is the metals traceability. Every Fairmined piece is hallmarked with their logo, so it can be traced back to the mine that it was originally sourced from. This means you can be guaranteed that your jewellery has not had a negative impact on our environment and community. Supporting Fairmined means we can work together to improve the conditions and environmental practices of mines around the world.

The Community

Fairmined is an assurance label that certifies gold and silver from artisan mining organisations. Their aim is to promote and embrace responsible practices, and transform mining into a force for good. As part of their focus to create a safer and fairer workplace, Fairmined raises awareness around the regulations in the mining sector, which will make the industry more conscious about the positive impact that their support can generate.

The Fairmined Standard promotes the well-being of workers throughout the entire supply chain, by ensuring;

The right working conditions

Regular health and safety checks

Fair wages and working hours

No child labor

Fairmined also gives back to the mining communities by hiring local workers, and re-investing funds into social projects such as schools and housing.

The Environment

In addition to the above mentioned social initiatives, Fairmined also supports the planet by implementing mining practices that guarantees environmental protection.

The Fairmined Standard promotes the preservation of our environment, by ensuring;

Reducing and eliminating the use of harsh chemicals in the extraction process

Protecting the water supplies

Reforestation

Adequate waste management

Overall environmental awareness

Untitled design - 2021-07-04T171239.724.png

When you put all of these initiatives together, you can see why Fairmined materials are 100% guilt-free! If you are looking to create a modern heirloom, an eco-friendly wedding ring, or a special piece of jewellery, you can feel great about it, knowing that your purchase has had a positive impact on our planet, and the community.

Out with the new, in with the old

Fashion trends come and go — faster than the changing of the seasons.

Each year, 50 millions of tonnes of left over clothing and materials end up in landfill, from overconsumption and the fast fashion industry.

When the KIND founder, Tansy Haak, was at university — her tutor told her: ‘The world is so full of stuff, so it is your responsibility, as a designer, to make sure the things you add to it are meaningful'.

It is a quote that has stuck with her throughout her entire professional life, and is the foundation of the brand that we now all know and love — KIND Collection.

5.png

As a brand, we aim to produce timeless jewellery that will last a lifetime. Jewellery that can be passed down through generations, and loved for decades. We aim to produce modern heirlooms, that will always maintain their emotional and financial value.

And when those heirlooms get passed down, we want to help our customers reinvent the old materials and turn them into a new design, in a way that reflects the values and style of the new wearer.

We are incredibly passionate about reusing, repurposing and recycling materials that are already mined and in circulation, and turning them into a modern design that can be worn and loved, as if it is brand new. So out with the new, and in with the old — we say!

Untitled design - 2021-06-19T182401.955.png

Our Recycle + Rework services are at the heart of our business, and we love working with customers who have inherited or collected jewellery over the years, and are looking to revamp the designs. We love that materials such as Gold & Silver can be so wonderfully recycled. What was once cherished by one person can be melted down, redesigned and repurposed into a beautiful new piece for another person. By re-using the existing materials, the jewellery still holds its sentimental value, but it becomes a piece that can be worn and loved — every single day. So if you have any jewellery lying around that no long reflects your style, get in touch with us! We can sit down and come up with a design that you will cherish and wear for the years to come.

13.png

In conjunction to our Recycle + Rework services, we have also introduced our range of Vintage KIND — a collection of carefully curated fine jewellery, sourced from across the UK. These pieces have been brought back to the KIND studio, where they have been polished, re-set and given a new lease of life. Buying vintage is the best way to support slow fashion, as it uses pre-existing materials that have otherwise been forgotten. Not only is buying vintage a more environmentally friendly option (as the gemstones are already in circulation), vintage jewellery is also filled with decades of personality! You can check out our Vintage Collection here, or you can learn more about our post consumer/vintage gemstones in our recently blog, here.

12.png

Our entire collection is cast in 100% recycled Silver & Gold and our wedding rings and bespoke commissions are made using 100% recycled Silver, Gold or Platinum as standard. When making jewellery, we keep every last scrap of metal that comes off in the process, so it can be melted down and reused in the next design. Preserving and reusing materials is something that we will always be passionate and vocal about — as it is a great way to reduce waste and promote a more sustainable lifestyle.

4.png

As a consumer, you have the power to change the way your money is invested and spent. To create a more sustainable future, we need to shop with brands whose values reflect our own. We encourage you to be mindful of your consumption, and consider shopping vintage or with brands that choose to recycle, reuse and repurpose, wherever possible.

If you would like to learn more about our sustainability practices, please feel free to reach out! Alternatively, you can read our recent blog “6 Ways That KIND Collection Practices Sustainability’.

Ethical vs Sustainable practices

Ethical vs sustainable practices: what do they really mean?

Living in today’s modern world, you are likely to have heard these buzzwords used by companies and organisations alike — and you may have wondered what do they truly mean?

8.png

Many companies use the terms interchangeably — and we too have done so in the past, but there is a big difference, and as a consumer it’s important to be able to differentiate between the two.

BY DEFINITION

Ethical

adjective

Relating to moral principles or the branch of knowledge dealing with these.

Synonyms: Moral, social, behavioural.

Sustainable

adjective

Able to be maintained at a certain rate or level

Conserving an ecological balance by avoiding depletion of natural resources

10.png

Ethical Practices refer to the responsibility a person or company has to act in a moral and acceptable way. It considers all those involved in any process and ensures fair, respectful and equal treatment.

For example, when looking at Ethical Fashion, this refers to the entire production line and supply chain of the garment from how the materials were grown and sourced, how the garment workers were treated and paid, and the welfare of everyone involved.

How does KIND promote ethical practices?

All KIND pieces are handmade in London by Tansy Haak making them 100% sweatshop free.

All materials used to produce our collections are sourced responsibly including 100% recycled, Fairmined© & Fairtrade precious metals.

The gemstones and diamonds that we include in KIND jewellery are all conflict free (regulated by the Kimberley Process) and have been sourced from Fair Trade Gemstones and Ocean Diamonds. Both businesses also create job opportunities for local communities and pour money into education projects which will improve the lives of future generations.

For more of a deep dive into each material and our suppliers head over to this page.

Sustainable Practices refer to the ability of a company's products to be maintained at a rate that does not deplete resources or pollute the environment. It considers the cost on the environment from factors such as using pesticides, dyeing and finishings, water and energy use and the treatment of waste. There's a fine line between what some consider to be sustainable, and with no enforced rules it is always important to do your own research into what company or product is claiming (Be gone Green-Washing!).

How does KIND promote sustainable practices?

We aim for a Zero-waste policy meaning we reclaim, recycle and repurpose wherever possible.

Through our Rework and Recycle Service we encourage customers to reuse their old jewellery and have it transformed into a unique piece they will actually wear. This minimises the frequency of fast fashion and reduces the impact on the environment from mining virgin resources.

Our KIND Vintage Collection additionally supports the aim to give pre-loved jewellery a new lease of life and is made up of a curated selection of fine jewellery that has been sourced in the UK.

Our packaging and promotional material is recycled and recyclable with biodegradable baggies used to store all of our stock.

We partner with One Tree Planted and pledge to donate one tree for every order of our eco-friendly jewellery pieces.

1.png

So in a snapshot, we define the difference between the two as:

Ethical Practices - concern human and animal rights.

Sustainable Practices - concern the environment.

As our name suggests we consider ourselves a KIND brand. KIND to the planet and those we share it with. We are passionate about creating beautiful jewellery and we aim to have a positive contribution to the fashion & design world and our wider community as a whole. If you have any questions about our practices at KIND, you can head to our website or send us an email, we are open and more than willing to partake in the ongoing conversation.

Signet Rings

Signet rings have long been a symbolic piece of jewellery, and their iconic designs can be traced as far back as 3500BC.

4.png

Traditionally signet rings were only worn by those in power (royalty, noblemen, religious officials), and they were often engraved with a family crest of coat of arms. Each ring was typically made of gold - featuring precious gemstones - and had a unique marking that was traceable back to the owner. As the face of the ring was usually engraved with an identifying symbol, they were used to seal letters and important documents. Wax was melted onto an artefact and the top of the ring was then impressed into the wax, leaving a clear and permanent mark.

Untitled design - 2021-05-22T182322.211.png

Similar to a signature today, signet rings would provide the wearers with a way of leaving their mark and a way to assure authenticity. Many families had a signet ring that was handed down from generation to generation, making them one of the most recognised heirloom styles.

More often now, signet rings hold a more subtle connection to the individual. Engraved or not, these classic rings have proven to be a timeless piece of jewellery which can still be passed down through families.

2.png

Over the years, we have had the pleasure of making a number of signet rings in the KIND studio. From traditional family crests to modern star-set gemstones, these rings are all treasured by their wearers - and their solid materials will ensure they can be worn for decades.

We recently made a signet ring for a lovely customer Emma Dai, which was made from 100% recycled 9ct gold. The ring was a gift to her brother, and is symbolic of their Chinese heritage.

3.png

You recently designed a family crest to celebrate your Chinese heritage and we were lucky enough to bring this design to life for you. Can you tell us a little about what inspired you to do this and how wearing your design makes you feel?

"We live in a Western-centric world and my brother and I, the first in our family to grow up outside of China, lived in a predominantly white community where we felt detached from our heritage. While my friends have been able to trace back their ancestry over decades, even centuries, mine is largely undocumented. We can’t change the past but we have the opportunity now to recognise and celebrate our cultural identity. By creating our first heirlooms with a crest that is completely our own, we have started our lineage anew; it was important to me that it represented our family as well as our stories and values."

1.png

If you are considering commissioning your own signet ring, please get in touch! Additionally if you have inherited any jewellery that you would like to use to create the signet, then we can also use existing gold/silver and gemstones that has been passed down to you. Click here to get in touch!

Vintage Diamonds

A few weeks ago we shared a blog about the Diamonds that we source at KIND. We uncovered what it meant to be a conflict free diamond, and what else we do within the business to ensure our supply chain is ethical and transparent.

Untitled design - 2021-05-06T155454.931.png

Today we want to continue the Diamond chat, and shed some light on an ethical alternative — Post Consumer/Vintage Diamonds.

It is so great to see that the number of shoppers seeking a more ethical or sustainable choice for their diamond ring is on the rise. Many conscientious couples are considering alternative ways to source their gemstones, with a recent surge in vintage (post consumer) diamonds.

In addition to being a more environmentally friendly option (as the gemstones are already in circulation), vintage diamonds are also filled with decades of personality! With all these positives in mind, it’s hard to believe that vintage diamonds can also be a more economical alternative to a modern cut gem of the same quality.

We love working with Post Consumer diamonds in the KIND studio for a number of reasons. As diamonds were traditionally cut by hand, many older gems have unique characteristics that aren’t often found in modern stones. These styles give vintage diamonds a unique aesthetic, making them stand out from the crowd (for all the right reasons, of course!). We can now source post consumer diamonds in an array of different shapes and sizes, so if you are looking to source a vintage gemstone, please get in touch with us! We are here to help you find any cut, colour, carat and shine!

Untitled design - 2021-05-06T155022.968.png

At KIND Collection, we support the slow fashion movement, and in 2019 we introduced our first range of Vintage KIND. Our customers can now browse our curated selection of vintage jewellery online, knowing these pieces are an economical and ethical alternative, whilst all having a story to tell! So far our collection has been made up by an assortment of 9 carefully curated Vintage Rings and 1 Diamond Cluster Necklace. Each piece has been sourced within the UK, and are brought back to the KIND studio, where they are polished and fixed up, so they are ready to go to their new homes.

Untitled design - 2021-05-06T155713.965.png

Another way that we promote the use of pre-loved diamonds (and other gemstones and precious materials), is through our Recycle + Rework services. Recycling the diamonds and stones from your antique jewellery and family heirlooms is a great way to design your own one-of-a-kind piece. These diamonds and gemstones may have been in your family for years, but that doesn’t mean the style and setting must stay the same. Our Recycle + Rework services allows you to create the design of your dreams, using existing gemstones that may not otherwise be worn. Vintage diamonds and gemstones often feature beautiful cuts that can’t always be found today, and best of all - no new mining took place for the creation of the piece.

Whether you are looking for an engagement ring, a modern heirlooms - or a piece of jewellery for another special occasion, please feel free to get in contact with us. We are always more than happy to help you find the perfect stone for the any occasion.

Birthstone: Diamond

Diamonds: A symbol of everlasting love, the celebratory stone of a 60th anniversary, and the April birthstone.

Untitled design - 2021-03-29T165839.628.png

For centuries, diamonds were thought to provide the wearer with unbreakable relationships and increased inner strength. They are admired for their beauty and adored for their durability. Whilst they are loved by million, diamonds have seen the best and worst of mankind. Although they have been celebrated and desired, they have also been illegally traded and have been the centre of slavery rings and perpetrators of civil wars.

In recent years, ethical concerns over diamond mining practices have forced industry leaders to implement better supply chain tracking. In 2003, the United Nations implemented the Kimberley Process, which aims to follow diamonds from mine to market, ensuring that conflict diamond don’t enter the global trade market.

Untitled design - 2021-04-22T093456.160.png

As diamonds are frequently sought after for wedding and engagement rings, they are a popular gemstone in the KIND studio. We work very closely with our suppliers to ensure that every stone that we include in our jewellery has been ethically sourced and is conflict free. Our diamonds at KIND have been sourced from Fair Trade Gemstones, a Fairmined supplier who heroes their female workers within their supply chain. This week we chatted to Kathy from Fair Trade Gemstones about conflict free diamonds, and what they truly mean.

We have sourced Diamonds from you at Fair Trade Gemstones since we started working on Bespoke projects in 2017. Can you tell us a little about how you got into the industry and why it is important to you that your offering of diamonds is KIND to people and planet?

I came to the industry some twenty years ago. I spent my life, growing up on mine sites, my father was a mining engineer and hence we travelled the world. In later life, one of the mines he owned and operated was the Chimwadzulu ruby and sapphire mine in Malawi. This led to us developing a marketing operation through Columbia Gem House of the USA. It was early days for the UK ethical coloured gemstone movement and we felt the time was right to bring the product to the UK. It has snowballed since with many more ethical disruptors following in our footsteps. With regards to diamonds, this was a natural development, along with coloured stones my clients required traceable diamonds. The only diamonds I could find that would fit this requirement were Canadian. It has been a long process and I’m continuing my due diligence with more countries as we speak.

Offering conflict free diamonds under the Kimberley process is the ground level of responsible sourcing but what other elements play a role in making a stone ethical and are there any projects that you think are worth supporting to facilitate change in the industry?

The diamond and gemstone industry has changed greatly over the last few years. It has been enlightening to see dealers recognising the benefits of a sustainable and transparent supply chain. The trade can draw from: The World Diamond Council’s New System of Warranties, The Responsible Jewellery Council’s Code of Practice and CIBJO’S ‘Guide to Responsible Practices in Diamonds, Coloured Stones and Pearls’. The key to all these is that they follow in part in the footsteps of the OECD’S ‘Due Diligence Guidance for Responsible Supply Chains.

Untitled design - 2021-04-22T095015.758.png

In addition to Fair Trade Gemstones, we have recently started sourcing our precious gems from Ocean Diamonds. Their diamonds are all accompanied by a Certificate of Provenance, which specifies the origin and the coastal area where the gem has been harvested. Their diamonds are retrieved in a responsible manner along the coast of South Africa - and we are proud to work with them at KIND Collection. You can read a snippet from our recent interview with them, below:

Can you tell us a little about Ocean Diamonds, Where they come from and how they are collected?

Ocean Diamonds are natural, alluvial diamonds that have travelled from land to sea over millions of years. They have experienced an incredible journey, only the strongest survive the power of the waves to eventually settle on the seabed. These diamonds are retrieved by professional, local divers in South Africa and Namibia. They have expert knowledge of where to search for the diamonds in shallow waters and they use small boats the size of inshore fishing boats with a couple of divers on board. Nature is very much in control of our operations as the boats can only work on a few days each month when the weather is calm enough. After prospecting, they dive in and position a small hose to transport the diamond bearing gravel from the seabed onto the boat. This diamondiferous gravel is sorted on board the boat using a sieve system and anything too large or small is returned to the ocean whilst the rest is taken back with them to the harbour side and sorted there.

How important is a transparent supply chain to you and how do you ensure your Ocean Diamonds are collected, cut and traded fairly?

The transparency of our supply chain is extremely important to us. The provenance of our diamonds and the community that work towards upholding the integrity of the origin are at the heart of our brand. We certify the provenance of our diamonds and provide details of the Country of Origin and Coastal Location of where each one is discovered. We work directly with the divers and ensure that they are paid fairly. Currently we have a small fleet of boats working with us and as demand increases we will look to grow sustainably by adding to this fleet.

Not only do we discover the diamonds in South Africa, we also have them cut by local professionals and GIA certified here too. It is important to us that we are contributing to the economy of the place where the diamonds are naturally found. We trace our diamonds from the rough to receiving the finished product, and when they are certified they are laser inscribed with our brand mark. We have a very short supply chain with no other middle men, we purchase direct so there is no chance of our diamonds being mixed with other sources and we know that our purchases positively impact our divers.

What are the benefits to our environment and the people we share with of using Ocean Diamonds?
Ocean Diamonds are the only branded diamonds in the world that are recovered by divers and each purchase supports the local industry and community. This method of retrieval does not use any drilling or explosives. Any trace of the divers working in the ocean is minimal and the natural weather patterns that follow eradicate any sign of their presence within weeks. Ocean Diamonds provide a unique connection to the ocean and give the wearer an opportunity to deeply resonate with this provenance, transporting them to oceans around the world. For someone who loves the ocean an Ocean Diamond is an exciting and romantic choice!

- - -

We have recently hand selected a number of Ocean Diamonds, and they are available for bespoke designs at KIND. If you are looking for a specific cut, size or style, please let us know and we will assist you in any way that we can.

One Tree Planted

March 21st: International Day of Forests, 2021

Since August 2019, KIND Collection has been working alongside the global charity, One Tree Planted. Over the past few years, we have pledged to donate one tree for every online order made at KIND Collection. Our aim is to offset our carbon footprint, whilst also investing in our future and aiding with reforestation.

Images from: https://onetreeplanted.org/

Images from: https://onetreeplanted.org/

One Tree Planted (OTP) is a non-for profit global organisation that is focused on reforestation. By redeveloping forests, OTP are offsetting our carbon footprint, whilst also protecting biodiversity and safeguarding the incredible species that we share our planet with. Their business model encourages businesses and individuals to give back to the environment, by simply planting trees!

Trees are integral to the conservation of our planet. They clean the air we breath, filter the water that we drink, and provide habitats to over 80% of the world's land animals and plant species. In addition to the environmental impact, One Tree Planted has also provided thousands of jobs to local communities on every continent (excluding Antartica).

What is reforestation?

Reforestation is the process of planting trees in forest areas where the number of trees have decreased over time, often as a result of humankind. Reforestation is the most beneficial (and cost effective) nature-based solution for tackling the harming effects of climate change, as trees actively remove CO2 from our earths atmosphere.

How can you help?

Talk about trees! Talk about your carbon foot print, and talk about the future of our planet. The more we talk, the more our awareness builds, and the more we can do to help. As an individual (or a business) you can also donate to One Tree Planted. Head to their website to learn more. Additionally, when you are purchasing from brands, do some research into their supply chain/business model, and the ways in which they give back to our planet. Choose where you invest your money wisely.

We are so proud to be working and donating to OTP. Since August 2019, KIND Collection has now planted 570 trees, thanks to the support from our customers and the team at One Tree Planted. Feel great about the jewellery you wear, knowing that you are helping our planet along the way!
