Caring for your Jewellery

Your jewellery becomes part of the daily fabric of your life, and that's why we want you to be able to enjoy wearing it as often as possible with piece of mind.

Here are a few tips for;

  • Taking care of your jewellery day to day,

  • Being aware of longer term upkeep practices which will prolong the life of your special pieces (so that they can last a lifetime... and beyond!),

  • Making sure its protected agains lost, damage or theft.

Be observant

Become familiar with your piece(s) and how it looks & feels. It isn’t unusual for metal to wear down overtime or for stone settings to loosen. Regularly checking your piece(s) over and being aware of any changes is really important. Look out for any loose stones or a rattling sound. This can indicate that a stone has become loose. If you notice this we recomend you store all parts of the piece and get it checked out for repairs.

Day to Day

It’s important to exercise common sense when choosing to wear or remove your jewellery. We all navigate the world a little differently and have different expectations of how our jewellery should look. Some people will remove their jewellery each evening to sleep where as others choose to wear it all the time. To avoid damage or scratches we recommend removing your jewellery, especially rings, when doing any heavy contact activity (like weights) or anything you feel might put your pieces under undue pressure.

When removing your jewellery, store it in a dry place as any moisture and can cause tarnishing. We recommend that you store your jewellery in separate boxes or pouches to avoid the pieces scratching each other.

Avoid

  • Avoid using any harsh chemicals whilst wearing your jewellery.

  • Perfumes, Moisturisers & Anti Bacteria Gel can erode and tarnish the surface of your jewellery so it is always best to remove it before you apply them.

  • Always remove your jewellery before showering / bathing and don't leave it in a damp bathroom.

To Clean

It is natural for Gold and Silver jewellery to tarnish over time or in certain conditions. This is a natural reaction between the metal and the air. Although this change can occasionally look quite alarming it is only a reaction on the surface of the metal and can easily be cleaned away with the eco friendly cleaning process below.

To clean your Silver, Gold & Platinum Jewellery at home simply:

  • Use warm water or carbonated water mixed with a small amount of gentle washing up liquid.

  • Leave your jewellery to soak in the mild solution for 15 minutes and then use a soft bristled tooth brush to clean the surface and between the claws.

  • Rinse the jewellery off using tap water and wipe dry with a soft towel or cloth.

Please note: Not all gemstones are suitable for this method and we recomend that you avoid soaking delicate stones such as emeralds, opals, pearls or turquoise. To find out more about specific stones and how to care for them please visit our materials page.

Insure your collection

For higher value and sentimental pieces we recommend insuring your jewellery incase of lost, theft or damage. Pieces can often be added as a ‘High Value Item’ to your household insurance or alternatively you can use a Specialist Jewellery Insurer.

KIND WORDS

‘I designed my wedding ring as a bespoke piece with Tansy and it was such a special experience from start to finish. She understood exactly how I wanted to incorporate symbolism and meaning into the piece, and made it to perfectly complement my engagement ring. I couldn't be happier with it. She even resized my grandmother's ring that I originally thought about remaking into the wedding ring free of charge! Thank you Tansy - I highly recommend Kind Jewellery for their conscious and beautiful work.’
